<image:title>Hedonists - Dave</image:title>
<image:caption>“I think it has been about twelve years ago since I started to delve more into dance music, especially techno. That happened by accident. Browsing the web, a bit, out of curiosity, I pressed a button which led me to a set by Klaudia Gawlas. She and her music were totally unknown to me. This set completely took me by surprise because of the energy it brought from the pounding, rolling bass. It was also very different from the electronic music I had listened to so far. (John Digweed, Sasha). From that moment I was sold and my journey of discovery within the world of techno started, and that journey still isn’t over. Music has always been a common thread in my life. Before diving into techno, I listened to all kinds of music such as pop, rock, new wave, trip hop but also glam rock, disco, electronic music, classical music and I had a period of many years that I was deeply involved in Jazz. Techno is versatile and has many sub genres. It depends on my mood what kind of techno I listen to. If I'm in an active mood or if I need to get active, I put on a solid, nice rolling set with a tight baseline and up-lifting hi hats. If I'm in a more relaxed mood or if I want to relax more, I often put on a hypnotic techno set. The deep basses and beautiful textures can take me to every place that comes to mind. I can also appreciate ambient techno for its meditative effect on me. The most important thing is it can hold my attention and give me the feeling there is a ‘soul’ and ‘story’ in it. It must take me on a journey. Over the years I have been able to visit many non-techno festivals and concerts. Techno festivals and club nights have a completely different vibe. I can enjoy the music in my own techno bubble, with friends or with people I don't know (yet). Sometimes a smile from a distance or a thumbs up is enough to show each other we are both enjoying ourselves. The term ‘Techno Connecting People’ is not an empty slogan. Over the years it has brought me a lot of pleasure and beautiful memories. It also has expanded my social network and brought me beautiful, valuable, and close friendships. To me Hedonism means fun and pleasure. These are words with a positive meaning. In my daily life I strive to put my focus as much as possible on people, things and thoughts that give me positive energy and therefore pleasure, enjoyment, and happiness. Techno parties give me a feeling of freedom and an escape from everyday life. You can be who you want to be and wear what you want to wear. I am a social and curious person and like to discover new things and meet new people. All this with an open mind and without immediately having a prejudice or value judgment. Like me, techno is not static but is constantly developing itself. The scene is a social and open space where people connect with each other. In general, people often pay attention to each other in a positive way. Whether they know each other or not. Keep on doing that! Freely translated, ‘Echo of your essence’ means to me a reflection of your being, of who you are. Enjoyment creates a smile on your face. I can already enjoy myself when I only have smiling faces around me at a techno party, such as at the very first party at Radion after Covid. If you see a smile on my face, you will see a reflection of my happiness. If you don't see a smile on my face, then I mostly have my eyes closed and enjoy the music to the fullest. If you are going to a techno party for the first time, do your preparation. It helps if you know the line- up and listen to some sets so you know what to expect. Go to the party with an open mind and watch out for yourself and others. If you want to talk extensively with someone, don't do it on the dance floor. And finally: Respect the scene, accept the people! When I must mention just one favorite DJ, I feel like I'm missing out on my other favorite DJ’s. My top 3 in terms of Techno DJs are Speedy J, Rødhåd and Oscar Mulero. Besides Techno I also listen a lot to Hypnotic Techno where Claudio PRC, Luigi Tozzi, Ness, Mary Yuzovskaya and Hydrangea are among my favorites. Each and every one of these mentioned, are DJ’s that never disappoint me, are able to hold my attention continuously and enable me to take a random journey with their music. But those are not the only ones because there are so many more. One of my most wonderful memories is a moment during the closing set of Speedy J at Draaimolen Festival 2016. The stage was at a large square parking lot which was surrounded by high trees on three sides. The sound system and the lighting plan were on point. Between the trees smoke machines had been placed on the ground. The evening had fallen, and it was already dark. In his set Speedy J built a moment of rest and started slowly to bring the tension back by playing a track of Virgil Enzinger – Odic Force (Audio Injection remix). It's quite a spacy track and at the same time as the track was played the smoke machines started up and from various places out of the forest the smoke made its way up in towards the light. This all created a kind of mystical and misty effect. The audience was in a kind of trance and went all the way with the building up to the climax. All this combined created such a surreal atmosphere. Everything fits and falls together. This was a special goosebumps moment that is etched in my memory.” @dave.wardenaar @hedonsonance / @mxmimik #hedonsonance #echoofyouressence #techno #freedom #equality</image:caption>

      <image:title>Hedonists - Bianca & Rutger</image:title>
<image:caption>“Techno keeps evolving and reinventing itself, it keeps expanding and stretching its borders by continuously implementing new influences. It also connects people and gives you the feeling that everyone is equal and that you can be who you want to be. Rutger is a very social person and has good energy. Not a party goes by where people approach him because of his vibe. When I, Bianca, encountered techno for the first time a whole new world opened. I have never experienced this feeling of openness and connectedness. It has helped me a lot in my social development. Before, I preferred to wait and see, but now I feel liberated, and I dare to go my own way. Over the years, we have met many wonderful people and made lasting friendships, but it has also made us stronger as a couple. Techno has helped us to keep growing because we can enjoy it together. Hedonism, for us, means a certain attitude to life or vision in connection with pleasure. We try to enjoy every free moment together and make lasting memories. Our recent favorite memory is from last November. We were at Orphic in Club Atelier when we got invited to an afterparty. Once at the after, we saw that D.Dan was there too. Secretly we hoped he would play but he made us wait for the right moment and that wait was rewarded. In the end, he played from 6 a.m to 10 a.m. and the energy was fantastic. He mentioned it himself later in his annual review on Instagram. Everyone who was there is still talking about it. Unfortunately, too often we see friends leave others to their own fate because they put their own pleasure first and do not want to give it up for a friend who is not feeling well. We believe in going out together and coming home together. It is your duty when someone is not feeling well that you make sure they get home safe. If it is a recurring pattern, then of course there will be a time when you have a serious conversation, but you don't have to judge them. Try to find the parties that capture the true techno spirit. Dancing is a free expression of the music you hear. There aren’t any good or bad dancers. In the techno community, you can be who you want to be so you can show who you are. In that sense, it is an echo of your essence.” @bncwthld & @withfield.borgelink @hedonsonance / @mxmimik #hedonsonance #echoofyouressence #techno #freedom #equality</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Being a music nerd, a techno event is about losing myself in the music first and foremost. The clean electronic sound and the volume make the music almost tangible, that’s a wonderful thing. As if you can touch it. As the party progresses, I like to just dance at the front continuously, with closed eyes. You don’t need to look at a DJ. That doesn’t mean I don’t care who’s playing, there’s certain DJ’s I want to hear and I like to discover new talent. When someone like Claire Morgan or Talismann performs nearby, I’m there. But second, it’s about people of course. You can’t get this immersive experience on your own, it’s about being in sync with others. I also love to chat with complete strangers, though mostly at the start of an evening. I like to speak to people from completely different walks of life, and at these events that’s a lot easier. I think it helped me get over a certain shyness, I make smalltalk with all kinds of people in daily life since I started raving. I can go to a party on my own, but it’s much better when you have a small gang of people with you who you know and love and can share these experiences with. I’m very glad I found that. I started going to raves in my thirties, rather late in life. I’ve always been very much into different kinds of music, like alternative rock, metal and new wave. But at some point I got a bit bored, new bands didn’t surprise me anymore. I very gradually started listening to electronic music, Kraftwerk was a major gateway for instance. I also got curious about all the dance festivals that were coming up around my hometown of Utrecht, I could hear the boom in my home in summer. So I started going to these events with friends. I still like to do so, but I also got to appreciate the intimacy of a smaller club where you can just lose yourself in the night with a few hundred people. There’s more focus on the music, and also more room for people to express themselves as they wish, dress how they want. That’s the kind of world I’d like to live in. I like all kinds of electronic music, but techno grabs me the most because of a certain darkness, I guess. Dark doesn’t mean hard, I like techno that flows naturally, with some funk in there. This can just as easily be played by a Detroit pioneer as by a twenty year old from Amsterdam. I think we have some great talent around in the Netherlands nowadays. I try to support that in my own small way by interviewing these people, so the world can get to know them. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference” @andre_kamphuis @hedonsonance / Annelies Kietselaer #hedonsonance #echoofyouressence #techno #freedom #equality</image:caption>

<image:caption>“I listen to techno, house, and electro every day and all the time. It gets me into a good mood. It takes my negativity out. I am more energetic. It makes me go on and on. I don’t remember having a good time without techno music. I met mister techno in Berlin at a new year’s event in Berghain. The best introduction you can get. It was magical. The music, people and place. I didn’t know what I was going to see. I was wearing a t-shirt and I was not very accepting of being naked, wearing jockstraps, leather or accessories like that. I didn’t understand it. It took me a while to see it as a fashion path more than a fetish. Since then, I know this is the music I want, the life I want. I started to understand how to wear outfits and be more accepting of people. The first time I was like, what’s all of this? But now I am like, go for it. I started rough. I grew a lot in these events and underground places in Prague. From a boring guy into very talkative guy. I became more accepting of people and I can adjust myself. This is what I learned from this journey. I can wear anything I want I can say anything. I can adapt my self at any place I am in. After going to these events for five years and meeting friends, new people and DJ’s I noticed they love my dance moves. Dancing also changes by time. You learn from people how to move. Now I can dance on the DJ stand and have the power of this place where everyone wants to know you and talk to you. Either you will be arrogant, or you will be humble and nice by helping people who had too much drugs or alcohol to go home. This is reflecting a lot on who I am. If I am too much, I realize it and I calm down. Sometimes I am very talkative, and I become boring. Techno parties have given me a lot of confidence. I feel very confident in my body now more than before. I was ashamed or too shy to wear tank tops, crop tops, see-through mesh or harnesses. Until last year. I wanted to show more body when the clubs would be open again after the lockdown. Now techno events are the reason why I started to work out. Hedonism for me means interacting with my body and someone else’s body. Specially In the dark when you look at someone but you don’t know if they are into you or not. Then you spend some time to discover what your relation is with this person. We make an eye contact from time to time and then I go somewhere else just to see if they follow me to a different stage that’s how I know if there is something between us. But if they didn’t follow me, then they are probably waiting for me to come back. We look at each other again as we are saying: welcome back! This is just the beginning and the ultimate fun for me. It is important to respect everyone’s space and outfit with no judgment. Good bouncers, a selective door policy and a no-photo policy also contribute to a safer space. And no means no. To first time ravers I would say, go with someone you trust and feel safe with. Be with someone that is willing to take care of you. And you will enjoy yourself. And bring a folded fan! If you don’t have big fan your chance of meeting new people is low. It’s the key. Do you know how many new people I meet because of my giant fan?” @7eemada2 @hedonsonance / Annelies Kietselaer</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Techno for me is all about the compelling bass and rhythm. I truly love to dance on techno, even with a limited option of moves. Techno sweeps you away, takes you on a journey, together with everyone around you. The whole crowd becomes one entity with multiple limbs, moving to the same rhythm. It is a release for me, it allows me to let go of any stress. I see myself mostly reflected in the community and the queer techno scene. It’s about surrounding yourself with people with the same struggles, norms, and values. The social aspect of the community is what drives me, letting go together. I feel extremely free to be me and dress however I feel like. They even encourage you to go beyond your own boundaries and explore your identity. It also has given me a sense of belonging, a community, first and foremost. Over the last years I have come to create my own chosen family in Amsterdam, next to my actual family. All my friends I met through partying, my boyfriend and part of my professional network. I currently also work for RADION (a club in Amsterdam) where I get to make a difference for my community from behind the scenes. It’s difficult to name the most wonderful memory. I have a feeling that all these memories become one. My most recent memory was our summer reopening at RADION, called REVIVE. The clubs were closed at that point for 1.5 years, so it was an emotionally charged day. It was also the first opening for my colleague Isabelle Ho Kang You and I since we started working at RADION. We were super nervous before opening. And normally I cannot stand all the cheering and applauding throughout the night, while I just want to dance and enjoy the music. But this night, all the cheering really hit home, and I almost started crying. You could feel the crowd was genuinely ecstatic and emotional, after all this time. Hedonism is not just about ‘fun’ but a sense of relief and release of pain. Pain caused in the past or something you’re going through in the present. And recharging yourself emotionally for the future. This pandemic has been a really challenging time for our community, for our mental health and social connections. What I do love to see since the (multiple) reopening is that we are finding each other again. And a whole new generation has formed during this pandemic. Normally the ‘new generation’ fuses with the current one, but now they were able to create their own community with their own rules and norms. Something that has been beneficial, since I feel they have been able to be more open and more ground-breaking than before. Be it about gender, expression or supporting each other. Education plays a big role in a safer and better nightlife. This doesn’t just mean general education, but also educating each other on gender, racism, and any other form of discrimination. Everyone on these dance floors needs to understand: “Everyone is welcome, as long as you respect that everyone is welcome!” @janjanssenswillen @hedonsonance / Annelies Kietselaer</image:caption>

<image:caption>I was twenty-one and being sent off to Berghain by Joost van Bellen, after we hosted a night of Rauw a day earlier in the city. He encouraged me to not go there before 3AM. Even while being on the guestlist. Walking towards the club, I saw people dressed in leather fetish gear. I stepped into this industrial looking building, hearing banging beats and I instantly knew I found a place that felt like home. The same way I’ve felt when entering club 11 on my first night of working for the Rauw crew a few years earlier. Right from the very start it fell into place. Later, Trouw and DS. It is a true love kind of thing. I immersed myself in the nightlife. Working and dancing nights and days away. A set of beats and you got me. The complete freedom in expressing and losing yourself in the music. It has given me everything. Without the night and the people in it, I would not be where I am now. In the night I have found likeminded people. In the night I found my chosen family. I learned to be vulnerable, to speak my mind. Since then, I am an open book and not afraid of taboos or showing who you are hence my tattoos. During night and day, I’m always dressed in black which is not only my favorite color but also a steady silent nod to the night. The night, my true love, gave me a fresh start after losing my dad in 2015 and being in a not so pleasant relationship with my ex. I have lost everything in a couple of months. I’ve regained and started a new life due to the night. I found a home through people who I have met in de DJ booth at a party, in smoking areas but also gained jobs through friends of a friends whom I have met in De School. But mainly I’ve danced my grief away during so many club nights (Het Weekend, Spielraum) you cannot imagine. I became my true self, came out as a queer person at twenty-seven due to De School and the friends I have met there. To this day I’m so super grateful spaces like these exist. There should be a zero tolerance towards inappropriate behavior to make the scene better and safer, i think. Not only towards preventing racism, misogyny but also fat phobia etc. Educate the people! To first time ravers I would say, get rid of the phone. Be present in the moment. Dance, embrace, connect with the people around you. They might surprise you, in a good way. @jackyhijstek @hedonsonance / Annelies Kietselaer</image:caption>

<image:caption>“I am a steady person and always looking for harmony and connection. I also find this in techno; it’s steady and harmonious but also changing, and the dance floor connects people with each other. Techno culture inspires people to be themselves without being judged or frowned upon. I met so many wonderful human beings which also made me a better person. It has given me so many hours of pleasure, love, happiness and friendship. When I was sixteen years old I listened to Gabber music, like most people of my age. In 1996 I went to my first festival Dance Valley where I fell in love with techno. At that time Dance Valley was a small festival with DJ’s I didn’t know yet: The Advent, Billy Nasty, Der Dritte Raum. I bought the CD of Dance Valley and started listening to techno. My most wonderful memory is the first time I heard Jeff Mills playing in Doornroosje, Nijmegen. It was in 1998 or 1999. The atmosphere, people. The energy. He really took us to another dimension. He beamed me up all the way, just like Scotty. Over the years techno music evolved, but it still gives me the same feeling. My favorite track at the moment is Riaz & Jeff Derringer – Deceit. I heard it in a set of Drumcell at Berghain a few years ago. It was the first track that hit the speakers. You already knew, buckle up, we are going on a trip. It just instantly grabs you. And that's what I like about techno. Dancing on techno takes over mind, body and soul. It takes away your troubles and it resets your mind. It’s the best remedy for reducing stress. At a party I am quite boring: I don’t talk to people, I don’t walk around and I rather skip when it's my turn to get some drinks. I just want to find the best spot to dance. And if it’s a good spot you will find me the whole time there. My tip to first time ravers: don’t talk too much and let the music be your guide!” @kc4magic @hedonsonance/ Annelies Kietselaer</image:caption>

I wish this would be the regular way of existing: A world where formalities don't matter, where people express their creativity and personality with outfits, their passion gain momentum, and they are also generally much nicer to each other than in real life. I feel we lose so much time with being formal and not conveying feelings in real life. Before I got acquainted with techno I was floating around genres since I broke ties with the underground Black Metal community. I already found Deep House quite close to my heart by the time I had my first encounter with techno: seeing Perc in a tiny club in Leeds. I remember my friend warning me that I would probably not like this type of music as it was quite hard, but I felt the opposite. I was super impressed with the hard beats. I guess if you grow up in Black Metal ‘hard’ has a different meaning. However, the real breakthrough came when I moved to Hamburg, Germany. Those years have a special place in my heart: the ambience, the people, and unlimited hours of raving gained a new meaning and I consider myself lucky for finding the right people who knew where the hidden raves were. All the people I know in Germany were very friendly and accepting, and I miss them and the venues greatly. After I left the Black Metal scene, I missed my ‘dark’ side to give space too. I have found this again in techno. I feel liberated when dancing in general but here three things come to my mind: freedom, self-expression and the shivers that deep and dark sounds give me. A lot of people I have spoken with feel like they are more able to express their emotions at techno parties and under the influence of drugs. I feel sort of the opposite. In the most positive way, I feel liberated to NOT have to feel other people all the time. I have already too many thoughts and feelings around people on an average day and the club is the place where these senses for me get dimmed. I feel empowered to not have to pretend, to not have to run the usual formalities which are taking over your life once you hit a certain age, to not have to take care of any responsibilities, to JUST DANCE. It is this freedom and feeling of uncontrolled self-expression of bodily movement in ways that might be considered ugly sometimes and pretty at other times, freedom of not caring what other people think of you. Dance in general has a special place in my life, and so it is almost a situation where I can say that the type of people and the uninhibited dance plays a much stronger role and creates my ties with the scene and not the music in itself. I see the music as a facilitator sort of, and if you think about it this is true in many cases, ultimately the people make the club into what it is. I see the lockdown as a personal challenge. I feel this is teaching us something, but I am also not 25 not anymore, so maybe it is easier for me to see it this way. I miss dancing of course, and the random opportunities to get to know strangers, the stress release, but I see this as a time to turn inwards and deal with some things people often like to swipe under the rug when the normal distractions such as partying are present. I don't fear that there will be much harm done to the scene (I am aware of the financial challenges clubs are facing of course, but just like nature finds its way through every disaster, so do people), looking through history and seeing human behavior, probably things will come back stronger than ever. Each to their own. I personally will be seeking out smaller events where people feel free to be themselves” @goalmostfancy @hedonsonance / Annelies Kietselaer</image:caption>

<image:caption>“I am an energetic person who likes to experience the world of infinity. I think it’s the same with techno music. The combination of emotional synergy on the dancefloor that is what it is about: the feeling of the bass and the vibe with the people on the dancefloor, exchanging eye contact and giving back the same smile, with the same thoughts. So far it has given me friends, unforgettable nights, a favourite hobby and a ribbed body, (joke of course). My first techno night was sober at Griessmuehle. I didn’t know who was playing or what the club stands for. We ran out of money after ordering our first drink, so we only had our fresh brains and the dancefloor. From that moment I knew, this was not going to be the last time. My best techno experience was being completely alone in Berghain: 15 hours of dancing and going through a lot of thoughts and enjoyments. In the beginning I didn’t feel free to wear what I want but if you are going to the right parties, you get inspiration, and the people will encourage your looks and style. To first time ravers I would like to say: find the party that suits you! And never stare at people who look ‘different’ from your opinion. At the moment it feels like a restless waiting game and we are all in it. It’s frustrating but it shows how much we appreciate our hobby. Wait and focus on other things is what is working for me. I think a lot of people are very unhappy about the way the government acts. They feel left behind and feeling very less prioritized. I also think a lot of people feel more alone than usual. Clubs are for a lot of people a way to meet and get inspired. This is all gone at the moment and has negative effects” @julius_otte1 @hedonsonance / Annelies Kietselaer</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Techno parties contributed to establish an environment where I could truly be myself. A place where I can explore deeper desires and suppressed parts of my personality. The queer community helped me to embrace my own femininity as a straight male. I also met many inspiriting people, and it has broadened my horizon in many ways. I always feel free to wear what I want but it’s just not that practical. I don’t like to be underdressed rather be covered to feel pretty. High temperatures often make it necessary to change my outfit, so I always bring multiple outfits to a party. Even after years of experience I tend to make bad decisions when it comes to clothing and overdressing. I must say that those moments my shirt becomes unwearable because of my own and other peoples sweat, and I take it off, are often the most magical ones. I think people who get in touch with this scene now are so lucky! The world surrounding electronic music and techno is a lot different to how it was when I discovered it fifteen years ago. People feel freer and the younger audience is a lot more openminded and aware of so many topics. The nightlife has become more diverse (we are not there yet) and a lot more interesting. The only thing I can say is you have to be careful to not get addicted to it. Like all things there are boundaries, and you should be careful not to live from weekend to weekend. After the lockdown people might have more appreciation for wat we have. In Amsterdam we were spoiled before Corona. The scene seemed more open and interesting than ever. In 2020 more and more stories surfaced about racism and exclusion in clubs. I think a lot of people (including me) had a blind spot for this. I hope we all learned lessons during this time of reflection and will be integrated during the re-build of the post-pandemic nightlife” @marcinklzs @hedonsonance / Annelies Kietselaer</image:caption>

<image:caption>“As a kid I loved early gabber and house music, but when I got older my passion for electronic music grew stronger. I became interested in making my own playlist. When I was searching for tracks, I stumbled upon a track from Jeff Mils. I instantly fell in love with the tempo and the groove: a whole new world opened up for me. At that time, I didn’t know who he was or what type of music. Now techno is part of my life. Since I listen to techno, I became a more openminded person and it helped me to find my true self. I like the diversity of techno. The tension I feel when I listen to a hard techno track for example or feeling euphoric when listening to a groovy up-tempo track. It’s another thing when you experience this on the dancefloor together with other people who feel the same. This is something you don’t often feel in daily life. There is one memory I will never forget. The night I went to my first Eerste Communie party. I was standing in the middle of a dark and sweaty dancefloor surrounded by lovely people. Hitam was behind the decks and was playing one of the darkest and sweatiest techno I have ever heard. I was dancing myself through the night. The vibe, the venue. It was just out of this world. I never felt so alive. Techno music has given me already so much: wonderful vibes, banger playlists, amazing parties, lovely people, friendships, unforgettable nights, mellow mornings and a lot of love. I am so grateful for techno to be part of my life. How I cope with the lockdown? I try not to let the lonely weekends and grimy weekdays get into my head. Never lose the hope that one day we all party together again. Most of the time I have a party by myself. Lights out, strobe on, blasting some proper tracks. Feel the vibes I get when I am lost at a party. I am also working on getting myself out there as a DJ and producer. The impact of closed clubs is massive. In a good and bad way. Producers and DJs have more time to create new projects and mixes including myself. But we also lost our main escape from reality. We have to take the time now to work on ourselves and find out where we stand for. Before we know it, we will see each other again on those sweaty nights and wavy after parties” @a.tillv @hedonsonance / Annelies Kietselaer</image:caption>

<image:caption>“The first time I stumbled upon techno I was a teenager in Italy. We had only one club in my town and since it was the only place you could go to every Saturday, I encountered techno there. I must say it was a very different type of techno, bubblier and more Mediterranean, definitely with an Italian kick. Techno excites me, every beat and bass. It makes my brain go fast and raises my mood and aura every day. It matches with my darkness and depth. Moreover, I love getting acquainted with new DJs, listening to hours of mixes. Going to techno parties has given me a sense of belonging, a safe place, freedom of expression with people who share the same love for this music. It’s my arena for trying to push my personal boundaries, with others but mainly with myself. Dealing with the lockdown is not easy at all. I can’t wait to reunite with ravers on the dance floor, this cannot go on forever. Now I put on my headphones with my favorite mixes and dance in my bedroom until I am too tired. When the gates will open again, we will probably be wild animals, so be careful we might have too much energy accumulated over this time. But jokes aside, I think it definitely made us all realize that sometimes we didn’t value the freedom of being able to dance so close to each other, and now luckily, we will value such thing even more.” @imalychee @hedonsonance / Annelies Kietselaer ⛓ @oscuracollection</image:caption>

<image:caption>“At a young age I started listen to hardcore, and still love it! When the years went by, I explored more music and found out that I am also a big fan of industrial techno. What I like about techno in general is the punchiness, how it can endlessly continue without getting boring and the emotions it can trigger. It takes you to another world and space. I have a busy mind and I guess that is why fast paced and hard techno satisfies me a lot. You can also hear this in my sets. Fast paced, a lot of variation and almost always with a hard edge. It has given me so much joy in my life. A lot of fun moments but above all, it connects people. I have met so many people through techno parties. I wouldn’t have known my best friends if it weren’t for techno. When I first heard ‘Ludovico Einaudi – In Un’Altra Vita’ I started to learn playing piano. I was in love immediately. I am a huge fan of Ludovico and because of him I eventually started to produce my own music. In the beginning of the corona crisis I didn’t know how to react. But eventually I accepted the situation and decided to make the best out of it. I got some new hobbies and worked on new tracks. We all know that this wouldn’t pass any time soon. The current situation is really hard for clubs, artists and organizations. Let’s just hope there will be a way that we can party responsible so everybody can be happy, free and get lost in music again!” @ziza.dj @hedonsonance / Annelies Kietselaer</image:caption>

<image:caption>“At one point I realized I was stuck in a daily routine and was focusing more on what other people think and expect of me rather than doing things that I enjoy regardless of what other people might think. Techno has given me more consciousness and made me more aware of how I feel, what I want to do in life and who I want to be with. And really going for things now instead of waiting for it to come. I wouldn’t have started my own jewelery brand (@oscuracollection) if it weren’t for techno, which brings me so much joy doing. Not only can I really dance my soul out, it has also touched me on a deeper level and made me come closer to myself. I also love the people there. They define the atmosphere. I have never felt more safe and accepted and met such wonderful personalities at a techno party than at any other party. I am a soft, calm and introverted person, which can be totally the opposite of techno music. But I think techno gets another side of me out, which is one of the reasons I enjoy it so much. I can really get out of my shell and let go. I really miss going to techno parties, as it has been some sort of release for me. I still listen a lot to techno music, but it’s just not the same to dance in front of a screen without people around you. However, I’m very grateful that I haven’t lost anyone due to COVID-19 and that I can keep working. I think it has been very hard for the techno community. Suddenly not having this space to enjoy, connect and let go anymore is hard and frustrating. I respect how people quickly created new ways of raving together, like live streaming and virtual raves. But it’s just not the same and satisfying enough. Not for the ravers and not for the artists. I believe however, the community will find ways as the love and crave for techno stays strong” @oscuracollection @hedonsonance / Annelies Kietselaer Check out her brand @oscuracollection</image:caption>

<image:caption>“There is a part of me that is not so good in letting go. Worrying about how I come across or what people think of me. Being at a techno party is like a release in some sort of way. I can express myself in a way that is not possible in my daily life. I can be really comfortable with myself, not worrying who is watching me when I am dancing. I don’t have to worry about looking silly or whether I look cool. Everyone is doing what they want to do. Whatever that looks like, it’s ok. For me it’s a freeing kind of experience. When I first came to Berlin my friend described the city as a hedonistic utopia. This was the first time I learned about hedonism. What resonates with me, is indulging in the things that brings you pleasure and joy. Without fear. Being hedonistic is also that you do it just because you love to do it, without justification. The culture within the city and industry has so much to offer too. There are so many incredible people that all have something unique. It’s like a path to something. Something you’ve never seen before. There are many opportunities to lose control or let go entirely. Being unafraid. Maybe I didn’t have that many opportunities in my life. Having this is cathartic.” @james_the_pain @hedonsonance / Annelies Kietselaer</image:caption>

<image:caption>“My love for techno scene is very big. It gives me a lot of positive energy. Dancing for hours is an important way to express myself. I have been expressing myself way better since I identify myself as a gay man. I can finally hook up and meet guys the way I want. Before something was always holding me back. My coming out was very special for me. I told all my friends personally, so I came out 35 times in five days. After my coming out I was in De School during New Year. I was standing on the dancefloor with all my friends and I realized that I could finally be truly happy for myself and be who I really am. It made me cry on the dancefloor. I was overwhelmed by emotions. All my friends were there supporting me, holding me and it made everyone fall into each other’s arms and cry. They were telling to each other how they were witnessing the rebirth of Kenneth and how happy they were that I could finally be who I am. After my coming out, I had a new party revival. Now I only visit parties where I know I can be myself, wear whatever I want and surround myself with the people I love. A queer techno party can be very sexual and sexy. The vibe is accepting. You can be who you are. It’s like something else. We all have a little love for this rawness and sexiness, I guess. This kind of parties are very intense in many different ways. You have people who party and people who party party. People who party go for a few hours and go home. People who party party can go on forever. It’s a little escape from reality and an important way for letting go for me. But you also need to be comfortable to be back in reality. Then I went to a rave and fell in love immediately. It’s a place of happiness, inclusiveness, respect. In the beginning I was still kind of scared. I was going home like I did a bad thing. It took some time to get warm, but yeah, I was with the flow immediately. At the time I started going to parties I also started therapy. From a trauma that I had. So basically, techno and therapy happened at the same time. I was in a place where all my thoughts would run wild. Everything was scattered, everything was like 10.000 thoughts at the same time. Hearing the steady sound and rhythm made my thought clearer. The music tells me what to do and what to think. But at the same time, you are in charge. There was one summer full of parties and festivals, that was the summer of my life. I was leaving my trauma behind and stripped myself from all the bad things. I made so much progress in my sexuality and confidence. <image:caption>“I have always been in touch with my dark side. That’s why I love the nightlife so much. My creativity starts to run at night. I started in the nineties. I’ve been to Roxy and IT. I loved it, but the music was not my taste. Back then you could find me at illegal Multigroove or Parkzigt in Rotterdam. With dream team Dano, the Prophet and Buzz Fuzz. But Detroit techno really stole my heart. Sometimes people ask me if it was better back in the days. I think I like it now more because of the advanced technology DJ’s use. One of my most memorable experiences was when @freddyk3614 did the legandary closing of Berghain. It was his birthday and he did a thirteen-hour vinyl only set. When I came out my feet were completely destroyed. It is the perfect example of how a good closing looks like physically. It was such an emotional journey. I am fascinated by all aspects of the underground. It’s something that originates from suppression, political reasons or not be able to voice yourself. The first generation is very open and involves other people. Then the second generation just wants to be part of it because it’s underground and they will exclude. Therefore, is going to be more popular and in the end it’s becoming mainstream. That’s my theory. I always knew that techno would bring me more than just music and friends. It has brought me to organize my own parties @eerstecommunie & part of @pechera_ams . It’s amazing to see it works and people get our vision. We are building a community with likeminded individuals. We understand each other. We connect. And we feel truly free. That is what hedonism means for me: freedom. I don’t have the urge to walk around naked, but I find it very important that other people feel comfortable to do so. Or to act out their fetish on the dancefloor. And I am also part of this, but I don’t want too. So, going to a party makes me feel like I am part of something real and different. A place where I can be myself. I don’t have to hold back. It made me more confident and expressive in my daily life as well. The harder techno styles really touch my soul. I feel it in my body, heart and stomach area. The strength of the sound comforts me. The constant tempo and vibe give me energy. You can just go all night and you don’t even know that time has passed by. That is really magic about techno. I am someone with lots of energy. I am happy, bubbly and very positive. I also hear this in techno. Even the darkest techno represents this bulb of energy. I can express my character as well. I like to take care of people, and to be there for them. I can also do this on the dancefloor. I hope more people will experience the positive vibe at festivals and techno parties. <image:caption>“Techno music and parties can be a really good treatment if you have problems with opening up or expressing yourself. I would recommend it to everyone who ever experienced problems with this. If the beats are really intense I kind of get lost. I don’t think about who is watching me or how people see me. Just dancing and feeling free. The music is heavy and happy at the same time. It’s very diverse and it’s also what I experience with myself: having different moods. When I have a lot of things on my mind and I go dance for a night, the morning after I feel like everything is in order again. It gives me a psychological recharge” @nastiarouge @hedonsonance / Annelies Kietselaer</image:caption>

<image:caption>“I had the honor to meet a few artists in person that I like and adore and had some chats with them about their music and life. To hear and mostly to feel their passion for the music on a personal level is really something I never thought would happen. I follow these artists wherever I can and always show my appreciation and loyalty to them. I always get rewarded with the biggest smile on their face and respect. One even told me I was being used as a measurement for the set; if I don’t smile and dance to the fullest, the set has failed for sure! I love the darker, rougher and underground industrial techno. For a lot of people, it sounds angry, hard or hostile, but to me it’s a reflection of I see the world, how I live my life and have lived my life. It gives me energy to go on, to continue things, it makes me happy. Gives me hope. It’s like the underground industrial and dark techno understands me, with every mood I have. Not everybody understands that kind of techno, just like not everybody understands me. I’m different, just like the underground techno. But the power and energy it gives me, I certainly give back to others surrounding me. I (can) make other people happy and energetic too, motivate them. Make them feel that there’s someone out there that understands them too with every mood they have. And sometimes that’s all you need to go (further) on and remain with a positive vibe. It doesn’t matter if you are alone, you are always together with people who share your point of interest for art and music without words. Just one look, one smile and you totally understand each other in that particular moment” @debralee1980 @hedonsonance / Annelies Kietselaer</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Techno has given me confidence. It has taught me to be my own person and be confident in who I am and what I am doing. Going to these parties has really allowed me to explore a side to myself that I didn’t know existed. Like me techno is complex and varies as a genre as well as within each individual track. There can be long slow beats or fast hitting ones playing on top of each other, but the mix sounds just so right. I like that there are so many different types of techno music and that there’s always a type of techno for the right moment and mood. The little moments of deep love and connection I’ve experienced with my friends on the dance floor are the best memories I have. I will hold onto those moments so dearly for the rest of my life. I like that it brings people together and creates friendships and memories for so many people. As long as everyone is safe, open minded, accepting and welcoming then everyone is welcome in my book, regardless of background, race, sexuality, sexual orientation or religion” @eli_casting @hedonsonance / Annelies Kietselaer</image:caption>

<image:caption>“I love the dark and to merge with her and techno. Feeling weightless, no talking, just this and the moment you are feeling. The sweat that runs all over your body while dancing. Your feet that hits the concrete and this moment in the dark that only belongs to you. I am a rainbow, colorful and black. This reflect in the way I am clubbing too. When I am in the mood, I get in my glitter pants and go to Kater Blau to space. Or I go as clown to Sisyphos to make people laugh and have fun. Sometimes When I don’t want to see or speak anyone, I go to Berghain or Griessmuehle. I just go dancing, sweat and smile. These are all different sides of my personality and different ways to celebrate techno. One of my favorite clubs is KitKat. Techno and sexuality form a symbiosis here, and everyone can be who they really are. Love when, who and where they want. It doesn't matter which sexual orientation you belong to or how you dress. This is one of the places where I learned a lot about myself and changed. The people here are like a second family. They give you the same warm feeling when you are on the sofa with a blanket. I was 21 when I was falling in love with techno and we are in a very good relationship, I think. It’s the longest of my life. If techno was a girl, I want to thank her for being on my side every day even in the darkest nights. Thank you for all the good memories and that you for protecting my soul. I hope we will get a long future together. Techno has shaped my life like nothing else and it will always be part of my life” @i.am.azraelx @hedonsonance / Annelies Kietselaer</image:caption>

<image:caption>“I love heavy techno. In your face and let’s go to a war kind of techno. If I really feel it completely, I can lose myself on the dancefloor. If I am in a good mood and have lovely people around me, I feel the best. I can let go of everything and I can dance my heart and soul out. It’s not happening all the time but when it happens, the happiness last for weeks. The excitement of going out is a whole experience for me. Dressing up is a huge part as well. I love to sew my own clothes. Sometimes I think about an outfit for the whole week, even if it’s super simple. The people you get to know is also an important part. The music itself, the excitement of going into amazing buildings and enjoy the architecture together with the music, light, clothes and people. One time I was at Berghain and I wanted to leave. I already stepped outside to the hallway with a friend and we were looking to each other and thought, the music is fucking amazing right? And we went back and danced for another four hours. It was closing and we didn’t realize. Why is the music off? Shit we did the closing! Stuff like this happens. The night where you have no expectations are the greatest. <image:caption>"Techno reflects my personality pretty good. It’s steady, repetitive and constant. And I am also like that. I was told once I would tend to find no end in a way. And that is one of those parts that you will find, especially in the berlin techno scene, the most. It’s not comparable to other cities like New York, London or Shanghai because of it’s intensity, technical quality and opening hours. One day I was sitting in Halle am Berghain during Ostgut Ton Weekend and I was looking at the ceilings. I was just blown away by the majesty, architecture and brutality. This everlasting concrete beauty. I wanted to capture something of that. I strictly respect their photo policy, so I didn’t take a picture but started to draw on my phone. I already had experience with digital drawing and a proper artistic background not just because of my architectural education. In a way, the phone is made for digital drawing in clubs because you have a glowing screen and it’s crystal clear. I can start right away, and it goes really fast. You will always find an interesting spot or situation while waiting on a drink or a track is not so attractive. Soon I posted these drawings on Instagram and suddenly it became really popular. People said I should exhibit it, so I did. Last year I had shows in Barcelona + Paris, and this year in New York. I got published in magazines. Partly because of the fame of Berghain but also because my work is about digital impressionism as a contemporary form of artistic expression as well. I also have drawn some clubs that are not here anymore like Chalet, Bassy or Output. Places where you couldn’t take pictures but are now captured. That also really interests me.” - @hachulla @hedonsonance / Annelies Kietselaer Check out his drawings here @hachulla</image:caption>

As a person with tattoos and wearing black I feel different when I walk in the street. But there I felt like everyone else. For me this is also the culture of techno: without judgement. Feeling free to dress how you want, to do whatever you want, sexually or not. I like to wear vests without t-shirts to parties. It’s practical and I feel sexy. The sound of techno makes me feel powerful. In daily life I am quit an anxious person and going to techno parties gives me the chance to release the bad energies I have. <image:caption>“The first time I was at a proper techno party I was amazed. No phones, no mirrors. People dancing to melodic techno. I thought, wow, this is a different world. It’s the trance and the meditative state that techno can put you in. There is so much energy in the music, and each techno DJ has their own unique touch. It’s amazing how there are so many different facets of the same genre. Can’t get enough of it. There was one night in Berghain when I started to cry because the music was so good. My body couldn’t express the emotions inside of me, so I burst into tears. That was so beautiful. I was shocked. I had a similar experience with classical music, but not quite as intense as with techno. I am a mix of an introvert and extrovert. The introverted part is when I dance alone, and the extravert part is when I dance in a club with my friends. With techno you can be both the introvert and the extravert on the dancefloor. Part of the fun of going clubbing for me is choosing or making my own outfit. It has to flow around my body like a skirt for example. It creates motion and rhythm around me, and gives me a bit of extra energy! Just like the olympic athletes who feel more graceful when they perform in their special outfits for the competition. When I leave a good party, I feel like I had a religious experience. I feel at peace, renewed, and refreshed” @lego_sskkyy @hedonsonance / Annelies Kietselaer</image:caption>

<image:caption>“From a young age I’ve been fascinated by club culture. As a teenager in the 2000’s I’d follow celebrity blogs about the nightlife adventures of the Hollywood bad girls like Lindsay, Paris and Britney. Later I would read Bret East Ellis’ books on rich and bored party people or watch a movie like Cabaret about wild Berlin in the early 1930’s. My first encounter with techno was at New Years Eve in my early twenties, when a friend took me to legendary club Trouw in Amsterdam. I danced until sunrise and felt like I discovered this new, secret world. My grandparents from my mothers side were Arabic Jews from Yemen, so at home I was raised with music from their culture. During family parties everyone dances to this festive music with a repetitive beat – just like techno it can bring you into a trance after a while. I guess that’s what I like so much about techno, that it can hypnotize the crowd and brings everyone together. What I like about nightlife is the fact that different rules apply. We live in neoliberal times where everything is about self-optimalization, competition and being productive 24/7. Techno parties offer a temporary escape. When I go out I love to meet new people and get a peek into their world: from nightlife freaks to creatives, from clubbing yuppies to fellow queers. While my own party outfits are quite minimalistic in terms of shape and colour I’m always inspired by what I see around me and see a lot of fashion trends that derive from what clubbers wore first – for example men wearing earrings now. When I go out I prefer to go to queer techno parties. The vibe is just more tolerant, respectful, open – and don’t forget: wild! At a party like Spielraum I can dance next to a topless woman, a guy in a BDSM-outfit and someone who looks like they were teleported from a 90s rave, and no one bothers eachter. At mainstream parties the vibe can feel more agressive. It’s important to educate yourself on the history of electronic music, which started within the communities of gay people of color. I think that without queer people nightlife would just be a snoozefest” @jonaskooy @hedonsonance / Annelies Kietselaer</image:caption>

<image:caption>Techno has given me a new sense of confidence in the expression of my body. Coming from the US dancing has always been something overtly sexualized, subject yourself to objectification. Now when I dance, I rarely think about how people are judging my body. As a kinky small-fat queer person, I love to feel myself jiggle as a dance, shake as I bounce, I marvel at all the things my body can do. And techno, to some extent, has shown me that. I know I have helped other womxn feel more comfortable in their bodies because of this and that is the most precious gift. I am able to be more confident in kinky spaces, I am not scared to reveal myself or my body, because I’ve been revealing myself the entire time. And goddamn do I love the looks I get when I undress in the club: both sexualized, disgusted, enamored and embarrassed. My tummy, my breasts, my ass all sticking out, my body challenges everything we have been taught in the western world that makes a woman beautiful. My body makes people question themselves, me, and our positions in society and I’m just so proud of who I have become. Techno reflects my personality in the sense that you never know what you’re going to get- when it’s good it’s really good, indulgent and rich, chaotic and unifying. And when it’s bad, it’s just really annoying. I have borderline personality disorder and it’s rare to find an art form that can encapsulate this momentum in fluctuation of emotion that I feel every single day. It’s intense, overbearing, freeing, wild, lovely: everything I’ve always felt. I am grateful for the ability I have to feel so intensely, dancing in the techno scene has let me release a lot of rage and love I have always been ashamed of, free of judgement. Sometimes the music can be too much: deep tracks where there is this tiny demonic voice, that is triggering for me. I have had to leave dance floors because of it. Or being consumed by lo-fi house on a sunny day staring at my chosen family in wonderment, tears brimming in my eyes because I really didn’t think I would make it this far – I am so grateful that techno can allow me to feel so much” @sassymeatball / @hedonsonance/ Annelies Kietselaer</image:caption>

<image:caption>“I'm quite vivacious and energetic - I like that many types of techno make me feel like myself and reflect who I am. I think hedonism and pleasure is central to my personality as well, which are important parts of techno as a scene beyond music as well. I like that there is so much variety in music, and yet it feels continuous. You aren't always aware of a track change, and the way it guides you through different phases and emotions feels like a metaphor for life. Techno is a sound journey and it helps me to relinquish control. I also love the scene of techno music - everyone always seems to be happy and is there for the music and the sense of community around them. It's both an escape as well as a coming together and being present. How a save space techno party looks like? Radical consent: everybody asking everyone else if they can touch them or interact with them. No rudeness, no entitlement. Queer friendly: a safe space for queers, trans, nonbinaries. Nudity and sex-positive: no sex shaming or body shaming. Freedom of expression. Substance knowledgable and helpful: no substance shaming and access to care and help in case of an emergency. People watching out for one another and making sure they are using substances responsibly.” @val._cal @hedonsonance / Annelies Kietselaer</image:caption>

People within the techno community come from a really friendly and nice place. They are down to earth. I am a very open person and I find techno people pretty openminded and playful. It brought me amazing friends. Everyone is still raving. You can be together on a party or create your own magical little techno bubble. I think one of the most wonderful memories was the anniversary label night of Jeff Mills at Corsica Studios in London. They only sold 250 tickets. It was just after Donna Summer died. Jeff was a massive lover of her. It was so moving being all together loving Jeff for what he was doing. And when he played Donna Summer’s ‘I feel Love’ at the end people started crying and hugging each other. While listening everything falls into place and I feel more at ease. My most wonderful memory is the moment I decided to start DJing myself. I can express my emotions and I get a peace of mind. I love the repetitive structure and the challenge to build up a good set. There is a lot of depth in techno. The parties bring me freedom. I can be who I want to be. I can show my kinky side and talk about sexuality. On techno parties it’s in general not about scoring a date. People are genuinely interested in each other and look beyond appearance. I feel connected with the people around me, even when we don’t talk. It also reflects my personality perfectly. I can be explosive but also quiet. You find these two opposites in techno as well. The best experience I had is when I moved to Berlin. In Berghain. Because of the length of the DJ-sets you forget everything, and you get a very special connection with the DJ. You are in the same space for so long, it’s like a tunnel. Another beautiful memory was last summer at @whole.festival I will never forget the feeling of togetherness with all those beautiful souls. In the end we are all different but that doesn’t matter. On a party we are all together. I met so many amazing people where I have a very deep connection with, also outside the dancefloor. Seven years ago, I started DJ-ing in my hometown Brussel. But I was missing something. I was always fascinated by sound, so I decided to start producing my own tracks. It’s therapy as well. I can use all my emotions in my music. That’s what I love most about techno: for a moment I can let go of all my worries and ascend into a different world.” @reconnectcontrol @hedonsonance / Lie Kietselaer</image:caption>

<image:caption>“I was 15 when I met the first gays who took me to a techno party in my hometown. It was amazing. The vibe of the bass really made me dance. A techno party was a possibility to meet my friends and have fun. From an early age I wanted to go to the Love Parade in Berlin. But it was only till I was 17 when my parents let me go. It was the most impressive encounter with techno in my life. The people, the music, the city. When I moved to Berlin you had a lot of underground parties going on. That were the real techno parties for me. You entered with a password that you got a few hours before via Facebook or a friend. Nowadays Berlin is still such an openminded city that it really doesn’t matter if you go to a gay, fetish, or queer techno party. There is not really a difference: it’s all the same mood.” @crazy.leather.berlin @hedonsonance / Annelies Kietselaer</image:caption>

      <image:title>About</image:title>
<image:caption>We fell in love with the techno dancefloor. It is such an unique and special place. It brings many different people together and it opens the door to ultimate freedom and pleasure. It connects people on a deep level, broadens horizons and encourages self-expression. It’s makes you forget. It makes you present. It makes you dance. It sets you free. And when you are in love, you want to protect and cherish it and make sure it grows to its full potential. By supporting the community of likeminded people and emphasizing the aspects that are needed to keep the dancefloor a place where everyone can dance like nobody’s watching, dress up without being harassed and flirt without expectations. A place where you will find the echo of your true essence. We are open to collaborate with artists and organizations that share our values to work together and create an even more beautiful, safer and inclusive techno scene. Let’s rave together and create a safer space for everyone by being curious, consensual and responsible towards others and yourself. Be HEDON</image:caption>
